- Abstract / Summary
- This text examines women’s position in Christianity and explores many of the tensions residing in Christian doctrine and practice. Religion, the authors suggest, is meant to free human beings from the rigors of day-to-day life. But they point out that although Christ, for example, preached women’s equality with men, Church doctrine subseqauently recognized women’s inferior social positions. The authors discuss both Catholic and Protestant traditions, providing a gendered reading of the Bible and analyzing marriage vows to make the case that Christianity is not liberating for women.
