Abstract / Summary
Women’s International Zionist Organization (WIZO). Activity report from 1929-1931 at the Sixth Conference in Basel, June 22-28, 1931. This report contains detailed descriptions of the Women’s International Zionist Organization’s activities between 1929 and 1931. Importantly, the report includes a comprehensive list of Galuth (Galut) and Palestine executive board members as well as council members from across Europe, noting national organizations from Aden, Africa, Egypt, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Great Britain and Ireland, Holland, India, Italy, Jamaica, Canada, Latvia, Lithuania, New Zealand, Norway, Austria, Palestine, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Syria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Yugoslavia. The proceedings provide a brief history of WIZO until 1931 with an emphasis on various educational institutions in Tel-Aviv. See also in this archive a WIZO report from 1923-1925 which also documents the organization’s early history. These proceedings include reports and budgets from the Galuth (diasporic) Executive Board and the Palestine Executive Board as well as summaries of the activities of the individual national organizations. The Galuth executive described various WIZO publications, notably Ada Fischmann’s 1929 book, The Working Woman in Palestine (Die arbeitende Frau in Palästina), on the history of female Palestinian workers over the last twenty-five years. Fischmann’s book appeared in Hebrew and German. The Galuth executive report further addressed the issues of cooperation with groups like Hadassah, the Jewish National Fund (KKL) and other Zionist organizations. Misrachi women were among those to make proposals to the executive board. The Palestine report includes summaries of activity at the “Canadian Hadassah” agricultural school for girls in Nahalal, the Romanian Federation’s Girls Teaching Farm at Ness Ziona, the WIZO Argentina Girls Teaching Farm at Afuleh, as well as teaching farms in Nachlath-Jehuda, Schechunath-Borochow, Petach-Tikwah and Jerusalem. The Palestine Executive also reported on the activities of the hostel in Tel-Aviv. The proceedings contain reports from each national organization including the names of local leaders, number of local groups per country and membership statistics. Additionally, the appendix includes tables of revenues from each group for WIZO activities in Palestine and detailed accounts of income and expenses in general.
