- Abstract / Summary
- Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of India's independence movement, visited the Kolhapur area several times. Here, Melanie Updegraff provides an account of a meeting with Gandhi. Though he believed deeply in religious tolerance and respected the Christian religion, Gandhi mistrusted missionaries, whom he accused of undermining the cohesion of the Indian nation by preaching a foreign religion. Though Melanie Updegraff clearly supports Indian independence, she has her reservations about Gandhi as a political leader.
