Abstract / Summary
President Sukarno attended the 2nd Summit Conference of Heads of State or Government of the Non-Aligned Movement, Cairo, 5-10 October 1964. He was the first speaker and delivered a speech entitled “The era of confrontation”. This article highlighted the issues raised by Sukarno: The politics of non-alignment actively challenged the old world orders which suppressed freedom amongst the colonised peoples of Asia and Africa; Colonialism was still alive and well, and causing a great deal of pain and suffering; Imperialist atrocities – committed by imperialist soldiers and mercenaries – in Indochina, especially South Vietnam, had resulted in the deaths of thousands of people, including women and children; and, Colonialists in North Kalimantan captured and murdered (Indonesian) “patriots” who fought for the legitimate independence of their homeland.
Feudalism remained the social reality in rural Indonesia, where cruel and greedy landowners opposed and sabotaged the implementation of the Land Act (Land Law: Undang- Undang Pokok Agraria, UUPA) and the Sharecropping Law (Undang-undang No.2/1960 tentang Perjanjian-Bagi-Hasil, Law No. 2 of 1960 concerning
Sharecropping). In other words, “confrontation” – according to Sukarno – meant fighting against the injustices of colonialism, imperialism and feudalism, be it in Indonesia or in other parts of the world.
