Abstract / Summary
In the early 1970s the young naive girl Bess, living in a small community on the Scottish north-west coast, falls in love with Jan, who works on an oil rig. Despite the locals' resistance they marry, and Jan returns to the drill platform, while Bess counts the days until he comes back home. She is sure that their love is blessed from above, especially because she is convinced that she can communicate with God on the mental level. When Jan is paralyzed after an accident, he fears that Bess will cut herself off from a normal life. When he is confined to the bed, he convinces her that he will recover quickly if she finds a lover and tells him about their sexual acts.
