Abstract / Summary
TRANSLATED CITATION: Yang Chongrui. "My Autobiography." In Dr. Yang Chongrui: Birth Anniversary, edited by Yan Renying. Beijing: Beijing Medical University, China Union Medical University Joint Publishing House, 1990, 143-53 (11pp.). DESCRIPTION: This book memorializes Yang Chongrui, also known as Marian Yang, for what would have been her 100th birthday. It includes original work by Yang as well as contributions from those who knew her and who supported her work for birth control. In this selection, her autobiography, Yang recounts her life from 1891 when she was born to 1949 when People’s Republic of China was founded and explains how and why she pursued her career in gynecology and obstetrics. From a very young age, Yang received a good education. In 1917, she graduated from Peking Union Medical College for Women with a doctoral degree. After graduation, she first served in a hospital in Shandong and then transferred to a maternal and child health hospital in Tianjin. Later, Yang went to Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) for further training, where she was hired by the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. During the years as a trainee and a doctor, she took a number of social service activities in her spare time, which included prenatal checkup and medical treatment for factory women. In 1925, Yang won a scholarship to study public health at Johns Hopkins. In 1927, she completed her study, returned to China, and became a public health instructor at PUMCH. Yang promoted the opening of the First Midwifery School and was appointed as principal. At the beginning of 1937, she was invited by the League of Nations to run a survey of the maternal and infant health situation in Asia and Europe. After the Second Sino-Japanese War broke out, she joined the Red Cross medical team to treat the injured. In 1941, due to her severe illness, she went to the United States to seek treatment, where she did not stop her medical pursuit. In 1942, Yang went back from abroad and continued her career. Under her leadership and with her efforts, clinics and hospitals for maternal and infant health were set up not only in cities but also in the rural areas. In 1947, she went to Canada and the U.S to study maternal and infant health in relation to population. In 1949, in response to the call of the new government, she returned to China so that she could serve her countrymen with her expertise.
