Abstract / Summary
Memory of Women: Tunisian Public Life, 1920-1960. Description: This book is a compilation of oral histories from Tunisian women. The research was supported by the Centre for Research, Documentation and Information on Women (CREDIF) and the Higher Institute of History of the National Movement. The book has two major sections. One side, from cover to the middle of the book, is in French. Flip the book to the opposite cover, and the text is in Arabic. Users of the Arabic text should be aware that the original interviews were conducted in dialectal Tunisian Arabic and translated into modern standard Arabic for publication. The French and the Arabic sections provide different oral histories. The French-language oral histories include those of Tawhida Ben Cheikh, Nabiha Ben Miled, Gladys Adda, Aïcha Jalila Mzali, Hédia Ben Salem, and Haydée Tamzali. The Arabic-language oral histories include those of Zoubeida Amira, Asma Belkhoudja Rbai, Zakia Bey, Mehrezia Ghaddab, Jamila Ourabi, Hassiba Rochdi. An English summary of the book and a translated table of contents is available in Women and Social Movements in Modern Empires, see: Julia Clancy-Smith, “English Summary and Contents of Mémoire de femmes: Tunisiennes dans la vie publique 1920-1960” (Translation, Tucson, Ariz., August 5, 2016).
