- Abstract / Summary
- In 1905 the Fédération Abolitionniste Internationale reprinted a manifesto against the legalization of prostitution in France written by Josephine Butler in 1875. Butler makes the analogy between the prostitute and the slave in chains, emphasizing particularly that men have devised a regime of medical inspection that is applied only upon women’s bodies and yet has been constructed with total disregard for women. Butler constructs a strong moral and religious argument against the regulation of prostitution so common across Europe in the 1870s.
