Abstract / Summary: Speech given October 1963. The main purpose of the UN is to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war but there are other related purposes as well. First, freedom – ending colonialism, individual right to dignity. Second, bread – better standard of life. Asks how UN can help keep peace do its job adequately. Creators of UN Charter didn’t know about the big powers as hostile camps, the atom bomb and the hydrogen bomb. Mentions Pope John’s dying plea for peace.
