Abstract / Summary
Hugely popular escapist fare from veteran director Sam Peckinpah (The Wild Bunch, The Getaway), Convoy was inspired by C.W. McCall’s hit song of the same name. Building on the late 70s appeal of the CB radio, the film focuses on a group of truckers who form a convoy under the leadership of Martin Penwaild, AKA “Rubber Duck” (Kris Kristofferson, Blade). Penwald is the most aggrieved of the bunch, having been harassed beyond the point of endurance by Lyle Wallace (Ernest Borgnine, The Dirty Dozen) a blackmailing traffic cop who pursues him through several states after ‘Rubber Duck’ fails to submit to his phoney speed trap. As news of the convoy spreads, unexpected allies join the line, and the now-gigantic illegal protest becomes the subject of national news reports. Brilliantly scripted by Bill L. Norton (Cisco Pike), Convoy is a pulsating, action-packed tale about freedom and the war of independence being waged on the American highways.
