Description
Since the early 1980's guitarist/composer Michael Knopf has been interested in developing a melodic guitar style based on vocal chant. He has modeled improvisations and compositions for solo guitar (and for orchestra, choir, ensembles and other solo instruments) on Flamenco, Persian, Arab and Hindu musical vocal styles.

These new works have made possible the enshrining of diverse practices in new, original music. Michael's musical paths have been paralleled by an active engagement with the chiaroscuro of material and spiritual frontiers. The human essence is beyond time and place, but like the sun's rays on a mirror, our essence is reflected in the physical and mental capacities we work with in this world. He believes that all well-crafted music aimed at serving the higher life of humanity is spiritual. The fusing of the intellect with emotional honesty and aspiration is the nexus for discovery of truth and beauty in all the sciences and arts.

Some of these works use alternate tunings which provide the guitar with a unique resonance, sometimes ostensibly sounding like the Persian tar or the Arabic oud, and at other times like a classical guitar but with an expanded range and a more evocative voice.
