- Description
- D'Bhuyaa Saaj is a group of chutney musicians from Trinidad. Chutney and chutney soca is the music of the East Indian community of this area. It is a popular Indian-Caribbean music widely performed in the Caribbean and the Caribbean diaspora overseas. Chutney musicians draw upon ideas from Indian folk traditions, devotional songs and Indian film music, as well as from calypso, soca and rap. It is said to have had its origin in the matikor ceremony, where women sang "hot and spicy" songs. Bhuyaa Saaj means to sit on the ground and entertain. Chutney song texts deal with a wide range of themes and have English as well as Bhojpuri words. This album consists of live recordings of the Remembered Rhythms tour of seven Indian cities in February 2005, a festival celebrating the music of India in a diasporic context. D'Bhuyaa Saaj and the music they perform represent the Indian diaspora in the Caribbean.
