Review
The second half of this two-CD release has music from the same Atlanta concert as the first. Clarinetist Tony Parenti is the nominal leader of a group that also includes the fiery cornetist Wild Bill Davison, trombonist Lou McGarity, pianist Ernie Carson, bassist Jerry Rousseau and drummer Bob Dean. What is different about this volume (which includes eight Dixieland standards) is that on the last few numbers, Eustis Tompkins takes over on piano and Carson switches to second cornet, playing with his idol (and main influence) Davison. They sound quite complementary on "Royal Garden Blues" and "Struttin' with Some Barbecue." Other hot numbers include "Wolverine Blues," "I Can't Believe that You're in Love with Me" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic." As one would expect with this lineup, there are some fireworks but the results are mostly pretty predictable. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
