Review
The Latin Jazz Quintet was among the more interesting, if short-lived, groups on the early '60s scene. The band made intriguing, exciting dates with both Eric Dolphy and Pharoah Sanders when each was in his sax infancy. The 15 selections on this CD reissue combine selections from two Latin Jazz Quintet dates done between recording dates with Dolphy. It favorably shows the band's range: covers of soul/jazz works like Gene Ammons' "Red Top," and such jazz standards as "Round Midnight" and "Milestones," surging Afro-Latin pieces like "Mambo Bobbie," and light pop material, such as "Blue Moon." Conga player Juan Amalbert was the band leader, with alto saxophonist Bobby Capers his most notable second solo voice. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide
