- This is a 20-bit overhaul of the classic Things Are Getting Better (1958) pairing Cannonball Adderley (alto sax) with vibraphone master Milt Jackson (vibes). Although their meeting was brief -- taking place over a single session in October of 1958 -- they left behind one of the most affable and spirited recordings of the era. They are given ample support from the heavyweight lineup of Wynton Kelly (piano), Percy Heath (bass), and the ubiquitous Art Blakey (drums). On "Blues Oriental," Jackson quickly sets the tone, unfurling some incomparable leads that shimmer and resonate around buoyant lines from Adderley. Even more dynamic is "Things Are Getting Better," as the soulful nature of Adderley's chops perfectly suits the animated melody. There are some prime examples of both co-leads at the top of their respective games, eagerly taking each other on. "Serves Me Right" is a moody and breathy ballad, offering a sonic contrast with an unmistakable air of sophistication. The cut is likewise one of two 'bonus tracks' on this CD reissue. In fact, it could be argued that the supplementary side surpasses the reading chosen for the original long-player. It certainly matches the intensity and reflects the song's intimacy. "Groovin' High" is an essential reworking of Dizzy Gillespie's nimble composition as the combo begin a free-form exchange of musical ideas and improvisational impulses with Adderley letting loose with some of his most involved interaction to date. Another loose and limber bop is "Sidewalks of New York." This time, Jackson counters with some liquefied vibe runs against a solid rhythm and blues backbeat. "Sounds for Sid" is a seminal entry in Adderley's early repertoire and demonstrates his infectiously jovial attack. Worthy of mention is Cole Porter's "Just One of Those Things" as Wynton Kelly is subtly spotlighted with some otherwise firm interjections. This 2004 edition also includes a previously unavailable take of "Sidewalks of New York," complementing the alternate "Serves Me Right." Even in its incipient incarnation, Things Are Getting Better [Remastered] (2004) is recommended as a definitive statement from both Adderley and Jackson. ~ Lindsay Planer, All Music Guide
