Abstract / Summary
Since bilingual programs are one of the concerns of education today, this documentary is especially relevant. It investigates how babies become bilingual, how school children fare in language immersion classes, and how adults cope with learning foreign languages. Acquiring a second language seems an insurmountable task for adults, yet children do it effortlessly. "The younger you are the easier it is to acquire not just language but any kind of skill," says Dr. Michel Paradis, a specialist in the brain and bilingualism at McGill University. The film shows how toddlers in a two-language family feel comfortable in both languages. The documentary takes us to a bilingual classroom in Virginia where Hispanic- and English-speaking children learn together while developing a sense of pride in their respective cultures. It also shows us an adult program where people have the satisfaction of attaining fluency in a second language. An important film for schools of education, language departments, and bilingual programs.
