Women and Freedmen's Aid after the Civil War: Part A

This question is based on the accompanying documents (1-8).В  The question is designed to test your ability to work with historical documents.В  Some of the documents have been edited for the purposes of this question.В  As you analyze the documents, take into account both the source of each document and any point of view that may be presented in the document.

Historical Context:

After the Civil War, northern white women volunteered to assist freedmen and women -- as teachers, fundraisers, distributors of relief, and employees of the Freedmen's Bureau -- and sought to mobilize the Federal Government in support of these efforts.В  Through the contributions of private individuals and organizations, as well as through the Freedmen's Bureau, these women lobbied the Federal government, taught schools, dispensed charity, ran employment bureaus, and assisted migration.В  Yet the efforts of these women met with resistance for a variety of reasons.

Task:

Using information from the documents and your knowledge of United States history, answer the questions that follow each document in Part A.В  Your answers to the questions will help you write the Part B essay, in which you will be asked to:

  • Discuss the work of women in the movement to aid freed people after the Civil War.

  • Discuss obstacles women faced in their work to aid freedmen and freedwomen
