In this article, President Hoda Charaoui provides meeting minutes as well as post-meeting reflections on the November 1927 Amsterdam Peace Conference. In attendance were feminists and peace advocates from a variety of national contexts including organizing members of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance (IWSA) In the Conference’s opening session, Margery Corbett Ashby, the president of the IWSA, explained that the Alliance places the issue of peace on its agenda since it was women’s sacred duty to spread a spirit of peace and fraternity throughout the world. On the second day, the Conference focused on issues of arbitration and international security and, a day later, on the question of disarmament. In closing, President Charaoui, the Conference representative of the Egyptian Feminist Union, asks her audience to turn attention to questions of peace, justice, and fraternity in pursuit of their national and feminist goals. As an example, she argues that members must keep in mind that Egypt’s geographical position and its immediate proximity to the Suez Canal renders the nation vulnerable to foreign aggression.

This short article calls attention to the plight of Palestinian women, highlighted by an appeal for support from the Committee of Arab Palestinian Women to the Egyptian Feminist Union. The President of the Egyptian Feminist Union, Hoda Charaoui, pledges financial aid and drafts a telegram to the British Minister of Foreign Affairs addressing the problems raised by the Committee of Arab Palestinian Women. A copy of the telegram is provided in English, calling for the end of Jewish immigration to the Levant and chastising the British government for ambiguity in terms of the Palestinian question.

Nabaraoui comments on the changed circumstances in the world since the 1935 meeting of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance in Istanbul making the Copenhagen Congress much less joyous. Many countries were not represented in Copenhagen—Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Greece, Rumania, Turkey and Russia and Asia and Africa were largely absent. Resolutions concerning totalitarian states and Jewish immigration preoccupied the Congress, with stormy discussion of issues concerning Palestine and the persecution of European Jews. In the end the body did not approve an Egyptian resolution opposing the continued immigration of Jews to Palestine in the face of Arab opposition.

This is a three-page report of recent business of the Egyptian Feminist Union. The organization had been particularly active in improving educational and professional opportunities for young girls, including raising funds for new schools and developing pedagogical lessons. The organization’s broader agenda included investigating questions related to hygiene, education, social problems, Muslim Law, civil law, and international law. During the spring of 1928, the organization also hosted a public memorial for Qasim Amin, an early leader of the Egyptian women’s movement.
