The Africa-America Institute (AAI) was founded in 1953 to support educational programs for Africans and to inform U.S. policies designed to reduce poverty in Africa. The educational program provides scholarship support for Africans to study in the United States. The policy program brings together officials from the U.S. and Africa to discuss issues and work together. Most of the material in this digital archive comes from the Women’s Africa Committee of the AAI, and focuses on women’s issues in Africa. Women’s leadership programs, artwork, and economic participation are all topics of conferences proceedings and reports included in this database. Show more Show less 1953 14 31

Founded in 1923, but building on the earlier work of the South African Native National Congress, the African National Congress (ANC), was the leading organization in the seven-decade struggle for equal citizenship for Black Africans in South Africa. The struggle proceeded by legal means in the first decades but evolved to include armed struggle in the 1960s and after. Though banned by the white government, with many leaders in jail or exile, the ANC led the struggle against apartheid that drew upon an alliance with the Communist Party and the nation’s leading trade union congress. The ANC negotiated with the ruling (white) National Party and secured a peaceful transition to democratic (non-racial) elections beginning in 1994 and has become the dominant political power in the country since that transition.
