This text outlines the proceedings of the International Feminist Congress held in Brussels, in the summer of 1897. The international group focused on five major themes: women’s civic rights; the nature of patriarchy; women’s economic rights; the status of the feminist movement; and women and public charity. In the discussion on women’s civic rights, a number of speakers addressed concerns brought forth by a new German civic code with attention also given to English and Russian women’s civic status. The second session, which investigated men’s social and biological roles, questioned the degree to which male privilege is socially constructed. In the discussion of women’s economic rights, many speakers linked the idea of economic independence with the goals of feminism––itself a topic elaborated upon in the Congress’s fourth session. The fifth and final session looked at women’s participation in charitable organizations, and hypothesized on how to make women’s public work in this arena more socially palatable.

This document provides an overview of the French Association of University Women, a national affiliate of the International Federation of University Women. The French branch (as well as the English and American branches) of the organization were founded after the First World War in an effort to promote “moral and intellectual reconstruction” and professional exchange among women. The French and American branches of the organization historically maintained an especially strong relationship with one another, particularly with the establishment of Reid Hall in Paris which became an academic center for American women in the 1920s. Although the Second World War disrupted the activities of the French branch, it nevertheless continued its commitment to offering national and international scholarships to prospective students; in the context of war, to refugee women from Poland and Czechoslovakia.

This document provides a brief history of the Swiss Association of University Women, part of the International Federation of University Women. In 1923, a physician created a group of professional women in Geneva and, after building ties in Basel, Bern, and Zurich, a national organization of university women was formed in 1924. That year, the Swiss Association applied for a membership charter with the International Federation. By 1931, the Swiss Association contained seven local groups which met each year in sites alternating between German-speaking Switzerland and French-speaking Switzerland. The remainder of the document details the Association’s organization at the national level, including its scholarship initiatives and an elaboration on its various committees: professional interests, women’s interests, domestic affairs, and international relations.

In light of the 1896 International Feminist Congress to be held in Paris, Leudet reflects on the value of feminism to French society. Stressing the ideology of women’s complementarity to men, the article argues against women’s participation in politics, suggesting that such activity would create a “third sex.” Using arguments related to “natural law” and women’s supposed biological and social “duties,” the author explains feminism cannot take hold in France because, as he points out, similar movements in England and the United States have resulted in an increased number of unmarried women.

This document is comprised of the proceedings of the International Congress on the Rights of Women and Women’s Social Roles as well as an extensive annex, which includes articles discussed or cited in conference sessions. The annex, like the conference itself, was divided into three major themes of discussion: economic, moral, and social questions confronting women; women’s access to educational opportunities; and women’s status in law and legislation. After an introduction and transcription of the conference’s opening speech, presented by Maria Pognon, an elaboration of the first theme occurs during the second and third days of the event. Divided into morning and evening sessions, the conference featured more free-flowing dialogue amongst participants than it did formal presentations. On the fourth day, contributors discussed various aspects to providing women with equal educational opportunities and the day was finished with a speech by the French feminist Marguerite Durand on women’s status in law and civil codes. The conference’s fifth and last day included morning and evening discussions on women’s political rights and the possibility of enacting laws which protect women’s rights in particular.
