In October, 1998, forty-five year old Benjy Nelson - former high school athlete and United States Air Force airman - had a sex-change operation. During his air force career, he began to dress as a woman - first at home, and then in public. For the last five years before his operation, Benjy dressed as a woman full-time. However, Benjy was a family man. His wife Debbie, appears to have been totally supportive of his decision to have a sex change operation and become Bridget. Their three sons, however, a fourteen year old and twelve-year old identical twins, did not take easily to having their father become a tall blonde with stiletto heels and an almost comic sense of the female. Confused and angry, they start getting into trouble. The film finds no easy answers as it sets the freedom of individual choice against family well being. College Adult

Rumours of so-called abortion tourism in Europe have existed for years. The makers of this documentary have gone undercover and using a hidden camera, reveal how a great number of women from all over Europe pay thousands of euros to have illegal abortions every day. Abortions performed up until the 32nd week of pregnancy - only weeks before a normal birth.
We follow a pregnant reporter as she travels to Spain and makes an appointment at a respected private abortion clinic in Barcelona. She is 31 weeks pregnant and both the mother and the unborn baby are completely healthy. Despite this, she is promptly offered an abortion for the price of 4.000 euro.
The documentary exposes an industry with dubious ethics and morals, where rules are bent, and money has the final say.

Kate Bornstein, writer and performer, was born a man. This documentary presents her frank account of her personal journey from unhappy boy child into liberated transsexual lesbian. Intercut with her satiric night club act called "Hidden: A Gender," are the stories of a wide range of people who refused to have their identity defined by whether they were born male or female. We are thus presented with a spectrum of colorful gender anomalies: drag queens, transsexuals, cross dressers, gays and lesbians... and those who refuse to be categorized. They want the right to be not "male" or "female," but whatever they choose in between. Why, they ask, must we have a bipolar gender system, when some other cultures can accommodate diversity? Academics including Dr. Walter Williams, anthropologist, and David Halperin, of M.I.T. encourage a reevaluation of traditional thinking, and a distinction between gender orientation and sexual preference. Adventures in the Gender Trade is guaranteed to provoke discussion! College Adult

AIDS: The Woman's Story travels to Kenya, Brazil and Thailand to tell the personal stories of women with AIDS. Set against a background of disease, poverty and social subjugation this is a story of vitality and will power, and of women who have the courage to fight against reigning cultural and religious traditions. Most women become HIV-infected from their husbands who can demand sex any time they want it. Many had not heard of the disease until they were diagnosed with it. And many are left widows before they become very ill. Monique from Nairobi, says, "If I had to choose between the antiviral drugs or changing the mentality of men, I would choose the mentality. Because while taking the drugs, you still need support, love and care, so the attitude has to change." While these women have made progress in their own communities, there is still much to be done at national levels. The documentary asks why AIDS prevention is not more of a priority in many underdeveloped countries. It looks at the ways existing structures of power and influence can make a difference at the international level. Former President Bill Clinton discusses how this global epidemic affects all of us -- economically, if not physically. It was Clinton who convinced President Mbeki of South Africa of the need to place AIDS at the top of his political agenda, proving that international solidarity in the fight against AIDS can deliver impressive results.
