In 1988 Benazir Bhutto became Prime Minister of Pakistan, the first woman to head a Muslim country. Born into a feudal society and educated at Oxford, she has indeed straddled two worlds. She was the daughter of the charismatic Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the first democratic leader of Pakistan, who was executed in a military coup in 1977. This film traces Pakistan's stormy political past, a powderkeg of a country surrounded by four dangerous neighbors - Iran, Afghanistan, China and India. Internally violence, corruption and poverty are endemic. This documentary explores a complex woman who some see as a calculating, fearless politician and others as a charming ambassador for her country, devoted to her husband and children. One of Benazir's challenges is to improve the situation of women, who have long been victims of discrimination and violence. College Adult

How do women perceive themselves in mid-life? In this lively film, women aged forty to sixty share the thoughts and experiences that enrich this new stage of their lives. Reflecting a wide range of income levels, lifestyles, careers and experiences, they have in common the conviction that growth and change are always possible. Whether they chose to re-enter the work force, go back to school, begin a new romance, or develop neglected talents, their attitudes challenge the stereotype of the middle-aged woman. While not everyone passed through menopause with equal ease, they all feel a sense of freedom and the energy to explore new directions. This important film shows that mid-life an opportunity for growth. College Adult

Of the thirty most industrialized nations, the U.S. has the worst record of infant mortality, with African American babies dying at three times the rate of whites. In some places, that rate equals those of many third world countries. When filmmakers David Appleby and Craig Leake discovered that their hometown of Memphis has the highest infant mortality rate in the country, they decided to follow those individuals who were working to reverse the statistics. Soon they began meeting some of the young pregnant mothers most at risk, and decided to concentrate much of their efforts on learning more about their particular circumstances.

The job itself is demanding enough but there are extra hurdles that women have to face. A man can be decisive but a woman is seen as bossy or overbearing. Her gestures are not firm enough for many musicians. And of course she cannot possibly tackle the more masculine classical repertoire like Beethoven or Verdi or Wagner or Rachmaninov.Marin Alsop, Mirga Grazinte-Tyla, Xian Zhang, Jane Glover, Joana Carneiro, Sian Edwards and other conductors share their own paths to the podium.

'Beyond the Wheel' takes a look at three women in Indian pottery, across the rural-urban, modern-traditional divides, with reference to the taboo of the wheel. For the 'modern' artist, Shampa, the taboo of course does not exist. 'Traditional' artists Sara and Neelmani do not touch the wheel. The film looks at how the taboo is turned on its head as they find a creative route to its circumvention, in the process inventing their 'own wheel'.

Vera Bila does everything in a big way. Her body is oversized. Her dark hair billows untidily. Her temperament is fiery. She chain smokes. She belts out songs with gusto in a hoarse, earthy voice. In fact, this singer from the Romany tradition is on her way to being a cabaret star in Europe. Surrounded by the husband she adores, and a loyal entourage of amateur Gypsy musicians who began as manual laborers, she tours the capitals of Europe in a caravan that frequently breaks down. Here is a portrait of a Gypsy diva who is viewed with indifference and suspicion in her own country, even as she gains acclaim elsewhere. The age-old discrimination against Gypsies has shaped Bila's character. She must constantly battle for acceptance. 'I sing about the troubles I have. I just put everything into my songs. Sometimes when I sing I cry...' College Adult
