This is an intimate portrait of a single mother in Burkina Faso who supports her six children through her street-side rice business. Like so many African women, Awa has received no formal education and operates within the informal sector earning, on average, about ' a day. As Awa narrates her life story, she never pauses in her unending preparation of the rice. Her father forced her to marry his childhood friend and she bore four children before her husband died. Her husband's three other wives resented this new favorite and would not help her once she was widowed. Sustained by her faith in God, she began a street vending business to survive. Marrying again, this time for love, she was soon abandoned but left with two more children to feed. The film takes us through Awa's arduous 16 hour workday, interspliced with interviews of her children who are grateful for her hard work in their behalf. Here is a glimpse of some of the economic realities faced by women today in urban Africa. College Adult

Bachelor Farmer is an intimate look at how a few gay men negotiate the challenges of small-town living in rural Kendrick, Idaho, population 369. In a place so small, no one can be a stranger. Being openly gay there isn't easy, but part of day-to-day small town living is dealing with difficult but necessary relationships. The gay men and the one gay woman profiled talk about the delicate balance between being “out” but not so far out as to antagonize their neighbors. They participate in the usual small town rituals of barbeques, Fourth of July parades, church on Sunday, and above all tending to the land. It is the love of the land they farm that has drawn them to this town--some have roots that go back generations, while others have settled to be with their friends. The cinematography captures the idyllic beauty of the rural landscape making it easy to understand their attachment to this place. Each of the gay farmers has a story to tell of why and how they made Kendrick their home. As they blend in with the community, they find that even a commitment ceremony is reluctantly tolerated. The partners later reflect that now they are treated like just another old married couple living down the road with too many cats. In this examination of outsider status and the struggle to be accepted in one's community, Bachelor Farmer is a rich story of community in the most unlikely of places. College Adult

To Westerners, Beirut immediately brings to mind stereotypical images of shattered walls, veils and Kalashnikov rifles. But the film Beautiful Beirut depicts a much more varied Lebanon, seen through the eyes of two young, modern, Lebanese women.
Through these two young women, the film draws a different portrait of Lebanon and Beirut than those usually presented in news stories about fighting, civil war and the activities of the Hizbollah movement. Beautiful Beirut depicts a country and a city that, despite being marked by years of civil unrest and the recent war with Israel, also represents a modern and complex melting pot of Western and Middle Eastern, modernity and traditionalism, with 18 different religious persuasions, a vibrant cultural scene, technological know-how and plenty of fashion stores and expensive cars.

This revealing self portrait of an overeater will strike a chord with most Americans who are concerned with weight and body image. It follows Barbara, the video maker, from seeming to be an attractive, cheerful young child through her metamorphosis into a five foot tall, one hundred and seventy-five pound conflicted woman. Mixing old photos and reminiscences of family members, the film creates an amusing vision of the survival of a compulsive eater and the trials of family members who love and live with her. Who are these family members who speculate on where Barbara went astray? A well -groomed mother who laments Barbara's inability to dress with chic. A fat father who gives the geneaology of his family's portliness. A loving husband who admires her beautiful eyes if not her shape. And then there's Barbara herself who describes the compulsion and shame of binging. She may be looking for the comfort food of her youth. She may be avoiding her sexuality. She may be wanting to "drop out." Beautiful Piggies is not a clinical study of an eating disorder. But no one who sees it will ever blame a fat person for being that way. College Adult

These days, ambitious young women in China feel they have to Westernize their appearance through plastic surgery in order to get ahead. They undergo lengthy, painful, and expensive surgery and hospitalization, often financed by their parents who can ill afford it. To accomplish the "right look," they visit surgeons to have their legs lengthened, their eyes westernized and their breasts enlarged. Some of the women end up with terrible physical problems as a result. It is a startling fact that every week some 16,000 Chinese undergo face surgery. The film includes a beauty contest for "Miss Nip & Tuck," in which all the contestants are women who have had plastic surgery. Many of their families have spent their life savings to pay for this investment in their daughters. The winner's family paid over $3,000 (which represented 2 years' salary) for her various plastic surgeries. The surgeons are happy to accomodate this business when one operation to lengthen legs costs $10,500. When one compares the attitude in China towards women during the Cultural Revolution when they were discouraged from dressing in anything but Mao jackets, the phenomenon is a startling illustration of China's rapid push into modernity. This is a touching profile of five lesbian and gay couples from multicultural backgrounds who have made a life long commitment to each other by going through a marriage ceremony. Each couple tells their own story of how they met, why they decided to marry and how their family and friends responded. These funny, bittersweet and, at times, triumphant stories speak of the power of love. There are no parental pressures or societal advantages persuading these couples to wed. They do not share health insurance or retirement benefits, or file a joint tax return as conventional couples do. They are validating a commitment that lends joy and meaning to life, especially for one couple with AIDS. The power of this film is that it portrays in warm, non-threatening terms, a revolutionary act that questions the very foundations of family structure. College Adult

In Becoming Ayden, we meet seventeen year-old Adina Scheim from Toronto who is becoming a boy named Ayden. Ayden is willing to go to great lengths to alter her female body to correspond with her male self image. Ayden recently began taking testosterone and her voice has started to deepen -- an irreversible physical effect of the male sex hormone. Ayden says she would have her breasts removed if she had the money to pay for it. She is sure she wants to become a man but convincing her parents is another matter. Her father, a prominent conservative rabbi, thinks she is too young to be making such an important decision. Now living on her own, she has found another family and way of life in Toronto's gay and lesbian community. Ayden’s physician reflects on the growing transgender population in Toronto, and the film offers hope that more and more communities are accepting those who choose to change genders, with the bravery and pride that Ayden displays.
