This ethnographic documentary follows three young Dutch women in their contraceptive choices. It shows how the use of hormonal birth control for women from a young age on is normalized, institutionalized and encouraged through social norms. Since the pharmaceutical industry only produces birth control methods for women, women are also the ones that have to carry all health risks and sometimes unclear side effects. Making contraception a highly unequal responsibility. The film questions the way in which we have perceived the pill as a feminist trope – and reveals a gap of information between contraception, side effects and women’s lived experience. Hopefully to start a discussion about women’s right to make decisions about their own reproductive bodies and the institutionalized need to control it.

This series on contemporary China is filmed from an insiders point of view and portrays daily life in one of the nation's busiest and most iconic cities. The three episodes provide a window into China today, giving viewers an opportunity to assess the similarities and differences between China and other cultures. This remarkable film profiles a couple that craves personal freedom, but is faced with the unwanted constraints of parenthood. In a society where grandmothers are expected to care for babies, how much freedom is it reasonable for a mother to expect? When Jun finds herself pregnant, she agrees to marry Long to avoid stigma and judgment. Jun is an English translator with a specialty in Virginia Woolf novels who identifies strongly with Woolf’s quest for independence. Long is a PhD candidate who is bored with reading about Karl Marx and takes a different approach to studying his subject. The film captures disagreements between Jun and her mother as new child-rearing theories spar with traditional ones. Jun’s disdain for her mother and plans for her career only elevate the tension, as she reveals her intentions to travel to Australia for coursework, leaving her husband and baby behind. When My Child Is Born gives audiences a glimpse of one manifestation of feminism in a Chinese family.

For Karishma, Apsana and Samira, going to school to complete their secondary education represented a seismic shift in worldview and a radical reappraisal of what their lives could become. Suddenly, a life trapped within four walls, fulfilling societal expectations came into question when the possibility of a life outside of the house became palpable. But as final exams approached, their families began preparations for their weddings. Immediately, they were forced to choose between their quickly evolving dreams and their obligations to their community. These stories combined show the complexity that emerges on the path to self-determination within a conservative, Muslim town - Dholka located in the western state of Gujarat, India. Filmed over 4 years, Brave Girls explores the urgent questions about the empowerment of women in the developing world from the perspective of the women living those questions and facing the consequences of answering them.
