During his air force career, he began to dress as a woman - first at home, and then in public. For the last five years before his operation, Benjy dressed as a woman full-time. However, Benjy was a family man. His wife Debbie, appears to have been totally supportive of his decision to have a sex change operation and become Bridget. Their three sons, however, a fourteen year old and twelve-year old identical twins, did not take easily to having their father become a tall blonde with stiletto heels and an almost comic sense of the female. Confused and angry, they start getting into trouble. The film finds no easy answers as it sets the freedom of individual choice against family well being. College Adult

Although traditional treatment programs may have been designed with male clients in mind, they did not usually address the powerful impact of gender-role socialization on men’s expectations of themselves. Frank Morales, the guest lecturer, addresses male gender roles in his groups for recovering men. In this session, he involves the class in exploring some of the “myths of manhood” that can impede recovery.

The film looks at how the taboo is turned on its head as they find a creative route to its circumvention, in the process inventing their 'own wheel'.

Nawal El Saadawi is well-known the world over as a writer and feminist. She is one of the most important champions of the women's movement in her Egyptian homeland and indeed in the whole of the Arab world. In almost fifty novels, plays, and short stories, her writing opposes violence against women, sexual oppression, and poverty. Nawal El Saadawi has often been touted as a likely candidate for the Nobel Prize for Literature and in America she has been decorated as a "Great Mind of the 21st Century". But Nawal El Saadawi is also a psychiatric doctor. Filled to the brim with books, travel souvenirs, and awards from around the globe, her small flat on the 26th floor of a modest apartment building also serves as a clinic for the psychiatrist who is now past her eightieth birthday. A refuge which offers a feeling of security, high above Cairo's roofs. Here, the private becomes political. The documentary charts the most important stages in the life of this extraordinary woman – a woman who risked her life for her convictions more than once, a woman who never gave up her mission despite death threats from fundamentalists and unspeakable conditions at the women's prison under President Sadat. Nawal El Saadawi's biography encompasses more than eight decades of contemporary Egyptian history as experienced from a female perspective. She is thrown back to her childhood when we leave the intimate setting of her "writer's refuge" above the roofs of the metropolis and are taken out to the village in which Nawal was born, where she too had to endure the terrible experience of genital mutilation at first hand. We find images of the past in images of the present, people from yesteryear in the here and now. We weave an autobiographic first person narrative into the documentary observations and real encounters of our female protagonist. Original quotations from Nawal El Saadawi's autobiographical works do not only highlight her own striking biography that has outlived so many social and political ruptures. They indicate also that it is not just a matter of one woman's life. This is the reality of life as experienced by millions of women under masculine authority – from King Farouk to Nasser, from Sadat and Mubarak to Mohammed Morsi, and finally the current military regime. From this dramaturgical interplay between past and present there emerges through the film a feminine view of the dramatic situation in present-day Egypt which shows in a vivid and historically contextualized manner, the non-negotiable demands of Egypt's women – and that irrespective of what the current political ruler is called.

Living in a small town with his mum, his stepfather and 3 younger brothers, this is quite the daily challenge for everyone. Hairo's mum takes her son on a trip to Brazil to meet his biological father, Marcello, who is far from happy by the vision of the dressed-up boy. The two males go through quite a dogfight, until Hairo's father comes out admitting that he himself is gay and has been working for years as a drag queen. Finally the two men find each other - as father and son.
A strong film about identity across borders and across gender.

The unwritten rules governing the traditional activities of men and women are sharply but subtly defined. Women’s work has traditionally been repetitive and ongoing, and its end result short-lived and impermanent. In contrast, the activities of men are traditionally long-lived, durable, or permanent. This thought-provoking video explores numerous and diverse instances of this often unrecognized but pervasive gender (and, often, racial) division and examines their causes and social consequences. Designed for use in a broad range of disciplines, this engaging production features illuminating first-hand testimony by college students and case studies drawn from topics that will be immediately familiar to students. 'Monuments Are for Men' is a powerful resource for any instructor who wishes to stimulate lively class discussion on issues surrounding the social construction of gender activities and on the ways that these patterns of activities are perpetuated in contemporary American culture. It was produced by and features Prof. Lynn Lovdal, whose earlier video, 'Sexism in Language,' is used in courses in speech, interpersonal communication, and gender studies at hundreds of colleges nationwide.

Why would a girl swear to stay a virgin? What kind of tradition sanctions this form of self-denial? In a mountainous area of Albania, an ancestral code of laws -- observed to this day -- placed women in the bottom rank of society. It dictates that "a woman is a sack, made to endure." A woman cannot choose her husband, buy or sell property or express herself politically. For centuries, on a bride's wedding day, her father gave the groom two bullets, to be used to kill his daughter in case she misbehaved and dishonored the clan. But there is a loophole. The ancient laws allowed certain women known as "Sworn Virgins" to take an oath in front of their clan, announcing their intention to remain virgins. This fascinating film reports on several unusual Albanian women who dress, act, talk, drink, shoot and are respected as real men. It's not a matter of sexual orientation, and there's no surgery involved. The villagers in this area simply accept the fact that some women want to live like men because they like their freedom. They prefer to manage their own lives; they do not want to marry and have children. One such virgin, the oldest of six daughters, took over the running of the family when their parents died. Another became an accountant, saying: "I am neither wife nor mother. I loved working, I did everything for myself." College Adult

Imagine 22 women in tights, shoulder pads, and helmets, poised on either side of the scrimmage line, ready to smash each other as hard as they can. Never mind that women aren't supposed to play tackle football. Forget that women's pro leagues rarely succeed. These are committed athletes and this is their one, slim chance to realize their dreams of professional sports careers. This remarkable documentary follows the fortunes of two women during the Women's Professional Football League's inaugural season of six exhibition games. One of the women is a young political consultant-turned linebacker and the other is an elite amateur basketball player and single mother taking a shot at wide receiver. Both traveled from afar, trading security and leaving jobs and loved ones for this long-shot at stardom. They won't be paid unless the league turns a profit. And in order to be successful, the players themselves must become involved in marketing their games and are forced to confront powerful stereotypes about women athletes and sexuality. But the league is relying on conventional images of women -- and a Hooter's model -– to build an audience. Can the athletes overcome their growing unease and can the league fulfill its promises? As the women struggle through their first season, balancing self-sacrifice with moments of great satisfaction in an effort to make the league both a financial and personal success, the film explores whether women can be anything other than a novelty act in a sport like football, so identified with masculine strength, power, and athleticism. It also probes deeply into what the experience means to the women involved."True-Hearted Vixens" is fundamentally about cultural change, seen through the lens of sports. It illustrates with insight, compassion, and candor the challenges that women face when they venture into any male-dominated arena. It was produced by Mylene Moreno for the Independent Television Service with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. "True-Hearted Vixens" is a presentation of the Independent Television Service.

Kate Bornstein, writer and performer, was born a man. This documentary presents her frank account of her personal journey from unhappy boy child into liberated transsexual lesbian. Intercut with her satiric night club act called "Hidden: A Gender," are the stories of a wide range of people who refused to have their identity defined by whether they were born male or female. We are thus presented with a spectrum of colorful gender anomalies: drag queens, transsexuals, cross dressers, gays and lesbians... and those who refuse to be categorized. They want the right to be not "male" or "female," but whatever they choose in between. Why, they ask, must we have a bipolar gender system, when some other cultures can accommodate diversity? Academics including Dr. Walter Williams, anthropologist, and David Halperin, of M.I.T. encourage a reevaluation of traditional thinking, and a distinction between gender orientation and sexual preference. Adventures in the Gender Trade is guaranteed to provoke discussion! College Adult
