DYNAMITE SUSPECTS SOUGHT BY POLICE IN $150,000 MYSTERY BLAST
(64)
OMAHA, Neb. -- Baffled by the circumstances surrounding an explosion in the business center of the city, officials launch an exhaustive investigation as firemen work diligently to confine the damage to a limited area around the scene. Three entire buildings are destroyed by the detonation and subsequent blaze. Police believe the cause an underworld reprisal while others hold to the theory that a leaking gas main brought about the accident, in the early hours of the morning. The shock rocked the whole community and terror stricken citizens, thrown from their beds, rush to the locality of the catastrophe. Rumors spread that victims are buried beneath the debris, spurring the searchers to greater efforts in combing the ruins. Solution of the puzzling event is still in doubt.
AIRMEN AMAZED AT SUCCESS OF FREAK FLYING "DIRIGIPLANE"
(87)
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The invention of Dr. Cloyd L. Snyder, an amateur aviation enthusiast, spectacularly meets a rigorous test before a jury of experts. The radical departure in construction heralds a marked advance in aero-engineering, as the queer ship, minus both wings and a fuselage, takes off under a tow, piloted by Glenn Doolittle on the initial trip that might easily spell disaster. But the freak contraption sails into the air like an odd prehistoric bird and completes its inspection flight without mishap.
25,000,000 KIDS REJOICE AS NATION'S SCHOOLS CLOSE FOR SUMMER
(88)
NEW YORK, N. Y. -- It's all over for another year. Reading, 'riting, 'rithmetic are ended and the youngsters demonstrate their deep regret by nearly trampling over each other in their "restrained" rush to put books behind them until Fall. "No more pencils, no more books, no more teacher's homely looks" and the ole swimmin' hole beckons to them -- but in the city with its cosmopolitan population of all colors and creeds, the kids jam the public squares and public pools. Nothing to worry about until September but sunburn blisters and a place to keep cool. Some fun, eh!
DEMOCRATS GO WET! WILD ACCLAIM HAILS NEW YORK CANDIDATE
(478)
CHICAGO, Ill. -- True to century-old tradition, the party convention is ablaze with excitement as the majority platform of the resolutions committee is reported by Chairman Gilbert Hitchcock.
Espoused as a great step forward by such leaders as ex-Governor Alfred E. Smith, Governor Albert C. Ritchie, and Senator David I. Walsh, the plank advocating the repeal of the 18th Amendment seems to be a tonic that electrifies the gathering, upsetting the decorum of the meeting, and even overshadowing the actual naming of a candidate for the President.
Repeal advocates stampede the gathering and the dripping wet plank is adopted by the overwhelming vote of 934 3/4 to 213 3/4.
Placed in nomination by his life-long friend, John E. Mack, the mention of Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt is the signal for another long and hearty outburst of approval, no stronger in vociferous display, however, than that which greets Governor Ely's speech proposing Al Smith for the highest office in the land.
A great show with laughs and drama running hand in hand as one of the most stirring conventions in the party's history builds to a climax that sets the entire nation up on its toes for the great November handicap.
