Hiromi Lorraine Sakata Fieldwork Collection
Description: The Sakata Afghanistan Collection of Afghan music consists of field recordings during two extensive periods of fieldwork in Afghanistan during 1966-67 and 1971-73, as well as some video examples recorded in Quetta, Pakistan in 1987. The Collection includes field recordings from different regions of Afghanistan such as Central Afghanistan, Southwestern Afghanistan, Northern Afghanistan, Eastern Afghanistan, Herat in Western Afghanistan, and Badakhshan in Northeastern Afghanistan.
The collection is organized into sound recordings from the following areas/sections:
Music of the Pashtun and Baluch in Southwestern Afghanistan.
Music of the Hazaras in the Hazarajat, Central Afghanistan.
Music of Heart and Environs including the Baluch in Western Afghanistan
Music of the Tajiks, Wakhis and Sheghnis of Badakhshan in Northeastern Afghanistan.
Music of the Tajiks, Uzbeks and Turkmen of Northern Afghanistan.
Miscellaneous recordings of the Nuristanis, the Pashtuns of Eastern Afghanistan and the Kazakhs and Mongols of Herat.
Each section is preceded by a narrative describing the general area and its inhabitants as well as the circumstances under which the fieldwork was conducted. Each recording is identified by:
The number of the recording indicates the sequence in which they were recorded within the area/section.
The date of the recording.
The place of the recording.
The name(s) of the performer(s).
The names of instruments if any.
Other information about performance if known, i.e. genre, language.
Additional information if available: photos, interviews, maps, references, comments.
